On Saturday 13th May, Freshford Primary School Racing Team set out to Renishaw in Wotton-Under-Edge with their recently completed ‘Goblin’ electric go-kart to compete against 18 other schools in their very first Greenpower competition. This competition is designed to teach our young engineers about materials, tools and construction techniques, as well as developing transferable skills, such as teamwork, within a fun competitive environment.

Our team have worked hard in their after- school engineering club to design and construct their Goblin car, which competed in 3 events – drag, slalom and sprint. The children all had a great day out and were awarded trophies for 3rd place in the sprint and 1st place in the portfolio award, which rewarded the students for their outstanding fundraising.

Sponsorship offers included support from numerous local businesses, £750 from a FLiSCA bid for new CAD equipment for the school, and even the kind promise of a complete second car from J Haynes of Haynes Publishing to enable twice as many students to take part in the competition next year.

Congratulations to the whole team and particularly to Clive Seager, Charles Malir and Paul Clancy for their inspiration and dedication!

The next racing heat will be at the famous Goodwood circuit in July.

A huge thank you to the many sponsors who have been so generous in their support of this project thus far.
